“Some days are just bad days, that’s all. You have to experience sadness to know happiness, and I remind myself that not every day is going to be a good day, that’s just the way it is! – the great sage Dita Von Tease
For years I thought that being “happy” meant feeling amazing all the time. To feel a sense of wonder and delight that never ebbed and always flowed. To be in a state of unending delight.
But that’s not happiness … that’s being loaded.
“Happiness” is the byproduct of taking right action. And it doesn’t always feel good.
So instead of wishing you a “Happy 2019,” I wish you a “Hello 2019.” This year, I hope you say hello to:
- Embracing change and growth … which often means tolerating the icky feeling of not being instantly good at something (yes, learning curves apply to you, too, Overachiever).
- Feeding your body well … which means accepting that feeling deprived while everyone else eats the work cake is just part of the deal.
- Treating others with kindness … which means NOT saying the hilarious sarcastic remark that would humiliate the other person … even though he or she totally deserves it.
- Cultivating a spiritual life … which means sitting still and breathing when all you want to do is drink a gallon of coffee, rush out the door, and check your texts.
Because if you say hello to all these things … I suspect that one day you’ll wake up (go, figure) happy.
